Page title and meta description
- Put the product name and the main descriptor first; add the brand if space allows.
- Write a meta description that states what the product is and one real differentiator. It does not directly improve rankings but can affect clicks.
- Keep every title unique across the catalog.
URL handle
- Short, readable, lowercase, with the main product term.
- Avoid changing a live handle; if you must, keep the redirect option on.
Product description
- Lead with what the product is and who it is for.
- Include real specs: size, material, care, compatibility.
- Do not copy supplier text verbatim. See our bulk rewrite workflow.
Images and alt text
- Descriptive file names and plain-language alt text.
- Compress images; check page speed in your own testing tools.
Structured data and reviews
- Check that your theme outputs Product markup with price, availability and, if you have genuine reviews, ratings.
- Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test. Never mark up reviews you do not have.
Internal links
- Link products to relevant collections and buying guides, and vice versa.

FAQ
How long should a Shopify page title and meta description be?
Search engines truncate by pixel width, not a fixed count. Roughly 50-60 characters for titles and 150-160 for descriptions is a common guideline; treat these as approximate.
Does Shopify add structured data automatically?
Many Shopify themes output Product structured data, but quality varies by theme. Test your pages with Google's Rich Results Test and check your theme's documentation.
Should I change product URL handles after publishing?
Only if necessary. If you do, Shopify can create a redirect from the old URL; confirm that option is selected.
Can AI write my alt text?
It can draft it, but review each one for accuracy. Alt text should describe the image plainly for people who cannot see it.
