How to use AI to draft Etsy titles, tags, attributes and descriptions without inventing details, keyword-stuffing, or breaking Etsy's rules. Includes a prompt and QA checklist.

What AI is good for on Etsy
Etsy listings are personal: handmade, vintage or custom items where the story and the exact details matter. AI helps with the repetitive parts, not the facts:
- Brainstorming phrasing buyers might search for.
- Turning your notes into a readable first draft of a description.
- Producing title and tag variants to compare.
- Keeping tone consistent across a shop.
It cannot know your materials, sizing, turnaround time or care instructions. You must supply those.
Step 1: Write a fact sheet first
Before prompting, list what is true about the item: what it is, materials, dimensions, color options, personalization options, production and shipping notes, care, and intended use or occasion. Mark anything you are unsure about. This is the same closed-fact approach in our prompt templates guide.
Step 2: Title
- Lead with what the item is in plain words a buyer would type, then add one or two real attributes (material, style, occasion).
- Avoid repeating the same phrase several times; it reads badly and adds little.
- Do not include claims you cannot back up.
- Etsy Help states titles can be up to 140 characters and suggests keeping them under about 15 words (source). Re-check in the listing editor, as limits can change.
Step 3: Tags and attributes
- Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters (source; see also the Seller Handbook on keywords).
- Use every tag slot if it makes sense, with distinct multi-word phrases rather than the same words rearranged.
- Fill in Etsy’s structured attributes (color, occasion, material, and so on) accurately; they are separate from tags.
- Ask AI for candidates, then validate them yourself. Etsy’s search bar suggestions and your shop’s search stats are better evidence than a model’s guess.
Step 4: Description
- Put the most important facts and a plain summary first, since buyers often skim.
- Use short sections: details, sizing, personalization steps, shipping and care.
- Keep your own voice and story; generic AI text makes handmade items look mass-produced.
- Do not allow invented specs, certifications, safe-for-kids claims or medical-style benefits.

Do not invent awards, reviews, certifications or guarantees.
QA checklist before you publish
- Every spec matches your fact sheet.
- No repeated keyword stuffing in the title.
- Tags are distinct and relevant to this exact item.
- Attributes are filled in and accurate.
- Claims about safety, materials or certifications are supported.
- AI use complies with Etsy’s current creativity standards for your item type.
- Photos match the text (colors, sizes, what is included).
Tools
Etsy sellers can use a general AI chat assistant, or a listing tool if they have a large catalog. For tools that handle bulk product copy, see how to rewrite descriptions in bulk safely. Check current pricing and Etsy compatibility on each vendor site; we have not tested tools on an Etsy shop.
Bottom line
Use AI as a drafting assistant for phrasing, and keep humans responsible for facts, keyword checks and policy compliance. Also read whether Google penalizes AI product descriptions for the wider search context.
FAQ
How many tags and how long a title does Etsy allow?
Per Etsy Help (checked October 16, 2026): up to 13 tags per listing, each tag up to 20 characters, and titles up to 140 characters. Limits can change, so confirm in the listing editor.
Can AI pick the best Etsy keywords?
Not reliably on its own. A language model does not see Etsy's live search data. Use it to brainstorm phrasing, then check ideas against Etsy search suggestions and your own shop stats.
Do I have to disclose AI use on Etsy?
Etsy has published creativity standards that cover how items are made and the use of AI. Read the current policy before listing, since rules differ by item type and can change.
Will AI-written descriptions hurt my Etsy shop?
Nobody can guarantee outcomes either way. Inaccurate or generic copy hurts buyers and returns; accurate, specific copy that reflects your real product is the safer goal.
