Two different kinds of tool
“Shopify Magic” (now called Sidekick) refers to Shopify’s AI features inside the admin, including help generating product descriptions. “ChatGPT” here stands for a general-purpose chatbot you use in a separate window. They can both produce a decent first draft of a description, but they sit in different places in your workflow, and that matters more than any quality claim.
Where the draft comes from
Built-in tool. Because it lives in the product editor, it can work from the product information already on the page, such as the title and attributes you entered. That reduces copy-and-paste and keeps drafts attached to the right product. You generally get fewer levers to pull: the options offered are the ones the interface exposes.
General chatbot. You decide what facts to include and exactly how to ask. That means you can supply a full fact sheet, your brand voice notes and a required structure, and iterate in conversation. The cost is that you move text between windows and need your own process to keep it organized.
Comparison at a glance
| Question | Built-in (Shopify) | General chatbot |
|---|---|---|
| Where you work | Inside the product editor | Separate window or app |
| Control over prompt and structure | Limited to what the interface offers | High |
| Copy-paste effort | Low | Higher |
| Brand voice | Depends on the options available | You can paste voice guidelines |
| Pricing and limits | Check Shopify’s current information | Check the provider’s current plans |
The table describes general differences, not measured results.
When the built-in tool tends to fit
- You have a small catalog and want quick drafts while editing.
- Your product data is already complete in the admin.
- You value convenience over fine control.
When a general chatbot tends to fit
- You want a fixed structure, such as an opening line, bullets and a care section.
- You need to include material the admin does not hold, like a detailed fact sheet or tone guide.
- You are comfortable building a repeatable process. Our prompt templates are a starting point.
What neither does for you
Neither tool can verify your product. Both may state a material, size or feature you never gave them. Neither knows your return policy, certifications or what is physically in the box. A human must check each description. For SEO, remember that search engines care about helpful, accurate pages rather than who or what wrote them; see our note on Google and AI-generated descriptions.
A fair way to test
- Pick five products with different attributes, including one with tricky details.
- Write a fact sheet for each. Placeholder example: “ExampleBrand tote, canvas, 40 x 30 cm” (invented).
- Generate a description with each tool using the same facts.
- Score each draft for accuracy first, then readability and fit with your voice.
- Count the minutes of editing each needed.
Choose the one that gives you accurate drafts with the least editing, and re-test when features change.
Other options
Dedicated description tools exist and may add bulk handling and brand-voice settings. See our roundup of Shopify listing tools and the Describely vs Shopify Magic comparison. More guides are in the Shopify hub.
Bottom line
Pick the built-in tool for convenience and a general chatbot for control. Whichever you use, supply real facts and review every line. Confirm current features and pricing with the vendors.

FAQ
Is Shopify Magic better than ChatGPT for product descriptions?
Neither is better in every case. Shopify's built-in tool is convenient inside the admin, while a general chatbot gives you more control over prompts and structure. Judge both on your own products.
Do I have to pay for Shopify Magic or ChatGPT?
Plans, limits and pricing for both change. Check Shopify's and OpenAI's current pages rather than relying on this article.
Can either tool invent product details?
Yes. Any AI text tool can add claims you did not supply, so review every description against your real product facts.
Which is better for hundreds of products?
It depends on your workflow. A general chatbot with a spreadsheet-based process may offer more control, while dedicated tools may suit large catalogs better. See our bulk workflow guide and test a small batch first.
